 At Denali Fly Fishing Guides, we believe in more than just casting a line—we’re dedicated to connecting people to the wild, untamed beauty of Alaska. Since 2001, our mission has been to share the extraordinary landscapes and fisheries of Denali with adventurers from all walks of life.

One of the greatest treasures of this region is the Arctic Grayling, a stunning fish known for its beauty and adaptability to cold, clear waters. Known for their agility and beauty, Arctic Grayling are often found in pristine, remote rivers and lakes, making them a symbol of wild, untouched landscapes.  As we guide anglers through the waters of Denali, we aim to offer more than just a fishing experience—we want to create lasting connections between people and the wild landscapes that surround them. 

At Denali Fly Fishing Guides, it’s not just about fishing—it’s about building a deeper connection to nature, respecting the environment, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

 The man, the myth, the legend. Rick McMahan, the founder of Denali Fly Fishing Guides, has lived and breathed adventure his whole life. A seasoned whitewater guide with years of experience rafting in some of the world’s most iconic places, including the Grand Canyon, Rick’s passion for water sports runs deep. After falling in love with the rugged beauty of Alaska, he settled in the Denali region in the 90s and, in 2001, founded Denali Fly Fishing Guides LLC—the first fly fishing tour company in Denali.

Rick's journey from navigating wild rapids to guiding anglers through the pristine waters of Alaska reflects his deep connection to nature. His passion for Alaska’s untamed landscapes is matched only by his dedication to preserving them for future generations. Sustainability has always been at the heart of Denali Fly Fishing Guides, as Rick believes in responsible stewardship of the land and waters he loves so much.

Denali Fly Fishing Guides is a reflection of his life’s work—guiding adventurers, telling stories, and fostering a connection to nature that is as enduring as the landscapes that inspire us.

Our commitment to sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We’re proud to operate in a way that respects the delicate balance of Denali’s rivers, wildlife, and communities. We work to minimize our impact on the environment by practicing catch-and-release fishing exclusively, respecting wildlife habitats, and prioritizing eco-friendly practices throughout our operations. Our goal is to ensure that future generations can experience the same pristine wilderness that we treasure today. Our guides craft each individual fly used during the trips, and use as much organic material as possible - including moose fur. In addition, we only use barbless hooks to minimize injury to the fish.

 We acknowledge that we are operating on the ancestral lands of the Ahtna people. The Ahtna have lived, hunted, fished, and cared for these lands for thousands of years, and their enduring connection to this place continues today. We honor and respect the Ahtna’s cultural heritage, their contributions to the natural world, and their stewardship of this land. As we explore and enjoy the beauty of Denali and the surrounding areas, we are grateful for the opportunity to share in the preservation of this land alongside its Indigenous communities.
